This policy describes the information collected when you use citely.uk, and why it is collected.
In short: there are no accounts and the site sets no cookies. The only thing it saves on your device is your light or dark mode choice, if you make one. It records a small number of events, not linked to you, to learn which questions it does not cover yet and whether people open the cited sources. It does not store your IP address, identify you, or record your screen.
What is recorded
- that a search matched no topic, but not what was typed;
- whether a topic was found by searching or by choosing from the list;
- which topic pages are shown, and which cited sources are opened;
- anything you choose to send as a topic suggestion, exactly as typed, including a search you choose to submit.
Details sent with each event
Our analytics software adds these details automatically:
- browser and version, operating system and version, and device type;
- screen and window size, language setting, and time zone;
- the address of the page, and the page you arrived from;
- random identifiers for your visit, which exist only in the page's memory and are not kept once you leave or reload the page.
As with any website, sending an event means our analytics provider receives your IP address. It is not stored, and it is not used to work out your location.
What is not collected
- no accounts, names or email addresses;
- no IP addresses stored or used for location;
- no profiles that identify you or link your visits together;
- no recordings of your screen, and no tracking of clicks, scrolling or mouse movement;
- no cookies. The only thing saved in your browser's storage is your light or dark mode choice, if you use the switch at the bottom of the page. It stays on your device, is never sent to us, and you can remove it by clearing your browser's site data.
Why
To see which questions the site does not answer yet, so topics can be added and search can find them better, and whether readers use the sources that each answer cites. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the site.
Who handles it
- PostHog provides the analytics. Data is stored in the EU, on PostHog's EU Cloud. See PostHog's privacy policy.
- GitHub Pages hosts the site. Like any web host, GitHub receives your IP address when you load a page and may keep it in its logs. See GitHub's privacy statement.
How long it is kept
Our analytics plan keeps events for one year. After that, the provider may delete them.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have rights to access, correct, restrict and delete information about you, and to object to its use. Because events are not linked to you, we usually cannot pick out records relating to a particular person, and our analytics provider does not let us delete a single event. Our analytics plan keeps events for one year. To make a request, contact us using the details below. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
